Walk from Hofsstaðir up to Hofsstaðaheiði with views of Mývatn and Sandvatn and to the western end of the lake, then down along Hólkotsgil to Laxá. After a picnic stop at Laxá, walk up along the river up in the middle of the slopes and then get a good view of Laxá and down along the upper part of Laxárdalur. You will learn about past power plant plans and the impact they would have had on the area. Stop by "Áslaug", which is warmer and some may be able to take a foot bath there. The trip ends in Hofsstaðir and there you will learn about the history of the town and the relics that have been found there. The walk from Hofsstaðir to Sandvatn is along a car path but then there is peatland and on the slope up along Laxá there is heather peat and possibly remains of sheep tracks. The walk ends in Hofsstaðir between 2 and 3 pm.
